Instructions for use

Prior to the use of the corneal shield, the surgeon should first instill a drop of topical anesthetic into the eye.

  • Squeeze the suction cup with the fingertips and place it over the apex of the shield.
  • Release the fingertip pressure to create the suction necessary to hold the shield for insertion. 
  • Raise the superior lid to create a pocket and slip the shield under the upper lid. 
  • Depress the inferior lid until the shield is in place.
  • Once positioned under the lids, squeeze the suction cup again to release the suction. 

Repeat these steps to remove the shield upon completion of the procedure.

  • Grasp handle with fingertips.
  • Raise the superior lid to create a pocket and slip the shield under the upper lid. 
  • Depress the inferior lid until the shield is in place.
  • Once positioned under the lids, release the shield.

Repeat these steps to remove the shield upon completion of the procedure.

PLEASE NOTE:  Shield has not been autoclaved

CAUTION: DO NOT PROCESS THE AUTOCLAVABLE SHIELD ABOVE 270 DEGREES AS IT MAY DISTORT THE SHAPE OR DESTROY IT ENTIRELY.  DO NOT FLASH THE CORNEAL SHIELD.

After use and prior to recycling the devices must be washed with hot water and soap.  Autoclave shield and silicone suction cup using one of the methods described below.  Package in an autoclavable pouch equivalent to the original Defend® pouch supplied.

  1. GRAVITY DISPLACEMENT: It is particularly important to refer to your manufacturer’s instructions for operation, since exposure times can vary according to the design of the sterilizer that you are using.  A typical standard for gravity displacement sterilization of the Kolberg Autoclavable Corneal Shield is achieved at 250°F or 121°C for 15 minutes at 15 psi followed by air drying at room temperature.  
  2. PRE-VACUUM STEAM STERILIZER: It is suggested to consult your manufacturer’s instructions for specific details of operation and processing times for plastic devices using your vacuum sterilizer.

A typical standard for steam sterilization of the Kolberg Autoclavable Corneal Shield is achieved by sterilizing at 270°F (131°C) for 10 minutes exposure in the pre-vacuum steam sterilizer chamber. 

  1. ETO GAS STERILIZATION: Use the standard of 16-hour sterilization process at 122° F (50° C) for 16 hours.  
  2. STERRAD GAS PLASMA: Low-temperature Sterrad® Hydrogen Peroxide Gas Plasma process may be used to sterilize our autoclavable shield.  Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for sterilizing plastic devices which is normally 130° F (54° C) for 25 minutes.

Product Facts and Questions

What materials are the corneal shields and conformers made from?

Our sterile corneal shields and conformers are produced from PMMA. The quality and finish of these shields and conformers are exceptional. Our autoclavable shields also have a highly polished finish but are produced from a high temperature plastic suitable for autoclaving at least twenty times or more.

What is the method of sterilization for our sterile devices?

Our sterile corneal shields, conformers and suction cups are sterilized using validated ETO ethylene oxide gas following the standard hospital sterilization protocol for plastic devices. These sterilized products are packaged in DefendⓇ ETO sterilized pouches, ready for use.

What are the methods for sterilization of autoclavable shields?

Autoclavable corneal shields must be sterilized before use by one of the four methods described below. After use and prior to reusing, the shields must be washed with hot water and soap and packaged in an autoclavable pouch equivalent to the original supplied DefendⓇ pouch.

  1. Gravity Displacement: It is important to refer to your manufacturer’s instructions for operation, as exposure times can vary according to the design of each sterilizer. A typical standard for steam sterilization of our autoclavable corneal shield is achieved at 250F (121°C) for 15 minutes at 15 psi followed by air drying at room temperature.
  2. A typical standard for steam sterilization of our autoclavable corneal shield is achieved by sterilizing at 270F (131for 10 minutes exposure in the pre-vacuum steam sterilizer chamber.
  3. ETO Gas Sterilization: Use standard 16-hour sterilization process at 50 degrees plus or minus 3 degrees centigrade for 16 hours.
  4. STERRAD Gas Plasma: Low temperature STERRADⓇ Hydrogen Peroxide Gas Plasma process may be used to sterilize our autoclavable shields. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for sterilizing plastic devices which is normally 130 degrees for 25 minutes.

  • Securely wrap and box the items and address to:

  • We recommend returning the item in a manner that provides tracking. As you are the sender, we cannot guarantee that we will receive it, so tracking and insurance is recommended for items above $100.00.
  • Please note that you must pay for all shipping costs associated with the return. Shipping costs are non-refundable.
  • Once we receive, we will notify you of the receipt and process according to each individual request.

REFUNDS

Once we have received the returned product, we will issue a refund by the original method of payment within 2 business days. We will send an email confirmation once complete and provide the estimated time to expect payment.

If you have not received payment within the expected time frame, please reach out to your bank or credit card company to see if they have received. Sometimes posting can be delayed.

EXCHANGES

If you are returning product for an exchange, we will process your exchange within 1 business day of receipt. We will send you an email to let you know when it has shipped.

PLEASE NOTE: You will be responsible for shipping costs associated with an exchange. Original shipping costs are non-refundable.
